Bethany College’s men picked the best-possible moment for their only lead of the second half here Thursday night against intra-county rival McPherson College.
Rodd Williams’ free throw with 8.2 seconds left broke a 72-all tie and the Swedes’ defense was able to force the Bulldogs into a tough shot, as Bethany came away with a 73-72 upset.
The Swedes are now alone in third place in the KCAC at 8-5, but the argument can be made since the second round of conference play started, they’ve played like a first-place team. They are 4-0 in the second half, including road wins at KCAC leader Friends and second-place Mac. The Bulldogs are now 10-3 in the KCAC and 17-5 overall, as their KCAC title hopes took a huge hit.
“This is what I preach to our players. We control what we can control,” said Bethany coach Clair Oleen, whose team is now 12-11 after a 3-9 start. “All we can control is third place right now and that’s all we’re going to worry about. If anything else presents itself, we’re not going to turn it away.”
