The McPherson Sentinel is beginning a new series focusing on the hobbies and interests of McPherson County residents. Each Thursday, we will profile a different hobby. If you have a unique hobby or collection or know someone with a unique interest, contact Emily Olson at emily.olson@mcphersonsentinel.com or at 241-2422.

The term “painting” probably brings to mind canvas or watercolors for most people. For one McPherson resident, though, painting is all about a different medium.
While Anne Albright, a retired teacher, has done a few oil paintings, the majority of her creative efforts result in painted china.
“You can china paint and do jewelry or anything,” Albright said. Some of her projects include tea sets, butter dishes, plates, lampshades, salt shakers, jewelry and glass bottles. Albright has even painted a large vase she calls an “urn” that she jokes she might end up in.
Unlike some, Albright’s hobby is not one she keeps mostly to herself. She teaches a china painting class in the Down Under room at The Cedars every Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.
“Anyone is invited and welcome,” she said.
Usually, 10 to 14 people attend the class, where they can buy china to paint and learn new techniques.
Although Albright now teaches class, she started out as a student herself just before she retired from teaching school and being a guidance counselor in Indiana.
“I kept seeing all this beautiful china in Indiana,” she said. “I discovered there are china painting classes all over the place.”
She even discovered a china painting class here in McPherson. Albright soon started her own class, though, because people wanted to learn how to paint her trademark flower.
“My specialty has been roses throughout the years,” she said, saying her paintings of roses are some of her favorite pieces.
With 30 years of china painting experience under her belt, Albright certainly has many of those pieces to choose from, but says she hasn’t run out of things she want to paint.
“I’m not through yet,” she said.
