For the last five years, the David Munnelly Band (now going by the name Munnelly) has burned down center stage at the Walnut Valley festival in Winfield, adding Kansans to the band’s numerous admirers.
Band leader David Munnelly is an acknowledged master on the button accordion and is joined by Paul Kelly on fiddle and mandolin, Phillipe Barnes on guitar (Phillipe is also an accomplished flautist), Ryan Molloy on piano, Kieran Munnelly on flute, bodhran, snare and vocals, and Shauna Mullin on vocals. The skill set of these Irish musicians runs deep and encompasses an encyclopedic knowledge of traditional Irish music. liveireland.com, a web site that carries Irish music and TV from Dublin, said that the band is “a creative force at the true epicenter of Irish traditional music.”
Irish traditional music is dance music, and Munnelly plays it with a joy and exuberance that is irresistible, or, as Sean Lafferty, editor of Irish Music Magazine said, “David Munnelly's music is a living link between two centuries of West of Ireland culture and the Golden Age of Irish American Music of the 1920s. Munnelly's work combines seemingly diverse elements into a unique and exciting sound. In an age when there are numerous Irish Bands touring the world music circuit, one can honestly say there is no musician or ensemble that has mastered so much of the roots of the music, in such a joyous, spirited and engaging way as Munnelly.”
It should be noted that Munnelly’s appearance at the McPherson Opera House on March 9 will be the band’s only Kansas date in 2010.
