Ann Hassler, director of the McPherson Convention and Visitors Bureau, spoke to the McPherson Lions Club about the activities and projects advocated by her organization.  The CVB is a city department which is 90 percent funded by the motel taxes in McPherson.  Her goal is to provide or help in activities which promote tourism in McPherson.  The office is located at the Chamber of Commerce building at 306 N. Main.
The CVB owns the McPherson Trolley, which has tours for seeing the lights around Christmas time and for seeing historic buildings and locations.  The trolley is also rented to groups for special occasions.
Some of the activities in McPherson include the 800 bicyclists who met here, recognizing and remembering the 1936 Globe Refiners who went to the Olympics, a banner expounding the McPherson College Auto Restoration classes (which will be put up on the Firestone Building at Euclid and Main), a booth at the State Fair extolling McPherson, a car show in the park this weekend, and the When Pigs Fly BBQ event.  The bureau also works with the McPherson Museum and the Opera House.
Grants given by the CVB are in the neighborhood of $25,000 to 30,000 and go to such places as sports tournaments and the Scottish Festival.  In addition, the CVB puts on free movies in the park.  The movie before the Scottish Festival will be Brigadoon.
Ann gave to the Lions members brochures titled, "Official Guide to McPherson, Kansas" that just came off the press, and such brochures will be available to the general public at the CVB office after the Kansas State Fair, where they will be passed out by volunteers.  Later this year calendars of McPherson will be available at the office.
