BURLINGTON — Second-place finishers Rhett Edmonson (106), Austin Eldredge (138) and Alex Perkins (195) led the McPherson High School wrestling team to a second-place finish at the 22-team Burlington Invitational on Saturday.

The Bullpups tallied 173 points, while host Burling ran away with the crown with 216.5 points.

“Burlington was a tremendous team effort by every wrestler on the team,” head coach Doug Kretzer said. “Everyone really wrestled extremely well.”

Brenton Crews (132), Scott Radke (145) and Bailey Yarborough (182) all took fourth place, with Yarborough going 4-1 on the day.

EJ Kretzer (120), Jonah Clarke (152), Mason Trash (160) and Luke Thompson (170) finished with winning records, good enough for fifth place each.

The Burlington Invitational featured a separate mat for the girls, and not surprisingly the Bullpups dominated the competition. The Bullpups wrestled nine girls who all finished third place or better. Three Bullpups took first — Mya Kretzer (113), Megan Manning (120) and Katelyn Simmons (160) — which led to 110.5 team points. The next closest team was Clearwater with 22 points.

“Just like the varsity, every single girl wrestled exceptionally well,” Kretzer said. “They’ve been working hard all year, and when given the opportunity to wrestle against other girls, they’ve all done really well.”

The Bullpups next hit the mat on Thursday, when they host El Dorado for an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division III match up at 6 p.m. The Bullpups are 3-0 in league play so far, while El Dorado is coming off a second-place finish at state last year.
