MANHATTAN — The McPherson High School boys swim team has all the momentum they need to make a serious splash at the AVCTL Meet on Saturday.

The Bullpups are fresh off a first place finish at the Manhattan Invitational on Saturday, their second team championship of the year, and head coach Matt Morrow believes his team is swimming better than they have all year.

“The boys are really swimming as a team now, and this will be a nice boost in our confidence going into next week’s league championship,” Morrow said. “I wasn’t expecting a lot of best times as we have been putting in some tough practices this last week to get our guys ready for our tapper for league and state.”

The Bullpups were led by the 200 medley relay team of Will Powers, Eric Gaeddert, Carson Stone and Dawson VanGoethem, who finished nearly three seconds ahead of the second place finishers.

The 400 free relay team of Powers, VanGoethem, Gaeddert and Gavin Soukup were dominant as well, taking first by over eight seconds.

Individually, Powers took first in the 200 individual medley — Soukup was third — Gaeddert won the 100 freestyle, and Rece Reiman shaved seven seconds off his 500 freestyle time by finishing third in the process.

McPherson tallied 410.5 points with Great Bend coming in second with 336 points.

“I’ve said this before, but the key to our success isn’t just our top swimmers, but all of our guys stepping up and swimming for those middle places,” Morrow said. “We will carry that forward next Saturday and try to achieve our season of goal of winning a league championship!”

The Bullpups will see familiar foes Andover Central and Maize South at the AVCTL Meet Saturday at Wichita Northwest YMCA. Other teams in attendance are Andover, Rose Hill, Wichita Collegiate and Winfield.
