Since 1872, Arbor Day has been celebrated throughout the United States, and schools have played an important role. Educators help children discover the social, environmental and economic benefits of trees in cities and towns. Lessons often encourage students to identify and plant trees in their own communities.

The city of McPherson supports continued efforts to educate children about community trees. In preparation for Arbor Day 2017, all fifth grade students attending school in the city of McPherson are invited to participate in the McPherson Arbor Day Poster Contest. Contest instructions and rules are available at

All entries must be original artwork and must address the theme “Trees are Terrific…and Energy Wise!” Posters should be submitted to the McPherson Convention & Visitors Bureau, 1111 E. Kansas Ave., no later than 5 p.m. on March 17.

The contest winner will receive a $25 Chamber check and recognition at the April 24 City Commission meeting. The winning poster will be framed and displayed at the municipal building along with past winners.
