The McPherson High School varsity softball team went on the road and picked up its first victory of the season Monday.

ROSE HILL — The McPherson High School varsity softball team went on the road and picked up its first victory of the season Monday, winning the second half of a doubleheader against Rose Hill 5-4, after dropping game one 10-6. With the split, the Bullpups season record now stands at 1-6.

Game one was an offensive battle as the teams combined for 26 hits. Bailea Crist picked up three of those hits for Mac and added three RBI. Elle Schrag pitched all six innings for McPherson, recording two strikeouts on 22 first-strike pitches. The Bullpups tried to battle back in their half of the seventh inning scoring three runs but, it was not enough as the Rockets shut them down to tally the victory.

In game two, the Bullpups took the lead 2-1 in the top of the third inning, then added two more runs in the fourth as they held on to win their first game of the year, breaking a four-four tie in the top of the seventh with an additional run. Sheridan Scott and Crist scratched out two hits a piece while Addie Fitzmorris went the distance on the mound, striking out three Rockets on 19 first strike pitches to give Mac its first taste of victory in 2017.

McPherson returns home to the Grant Sports Complex Friday as they will host Salina South at 4p.m. in a doubleheader.
