"I remember running it when I was growing up."
For those who want to get a little pre-festival workout, registration is now open for the 2017 Ridge Run June 3.
The two-mile run, walk or jog will begin at 7:45 a.m. before most other attractions of the annual Black Kettle Festival get underway. It will begin at the Moundridge High School parking lot, 526 E. Cole St., and travel through city limits before ending at Black Kettle Park.
"This has been going on for quite some time," said Shelby Graber, who has coordinated the event for the last four years. "I remember running it when I was growing up."
The run is one of the earliest events on June 3, starting after the Moundridge Municipal Airport fly-in and just before the car show at Wheatridge Park. Between 50 and 60 people show up each year, depending on weather, to complete a two-mile course contained entirely within city limits.
"We're a small town, but we found a two-mile route in the city," Graber laughed.
Those who register before May 5 will get an early bird discount — $10 for children ages 14 and younger, and $14 for people ages 15 and older. Registration will remain open until the morning of the run, with costs rising to $12 for children ages 14 and younger and $20 for people ages 15 and older.
There is no minimum age to participate, though runners should be in good enough health to complete the course. Runners are welcome to bring strollers if needed.
"It's a pretty low-key run. It's good for participants of every age and ability," Graber said.
All proceeds from the run will go to the Moundridge High School volley ball team for new uniforms and equipment. Top two runners of each gender in each age bracket will get awards as well: 10 and under, 11-16, 17-20, 21-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50 and older.
"It's a lot of fun, and for a great cause," Graber said.
Registration forms can be downloaded at https://usd423.org/p/recreation-commission or picked up at the Moundridge City Office, 225 S. Christian Ave., or Moundridge Public Library, 220 S. Christian Ave. Completed forms can be dropped off at Moundridge Middle School or Moundridge High School.
