McPherson's Jacob Lackey returns to the State golf tournament next week in Wamego after shooting a 3-over 71 in regional play.
CLAY CENTER — McPherson's Jacob Lackey, playing on a course that took away the strength and length of his driver, shot a 3-over 71 Monday to finish in fourth place in the Clay Center Regional and punch his ticket to the State tournament in Wamego next week. Lackey finished six shots back of regional winner Mason Ahlberg of Clay Center Community High School, who was playing on his home course at the Clay Center Country Club.
Lackey went out in 35, carding birdies on one and six, while settling for bogeys on three, five and seven. He moved to even par with a birdie on 10 but suffered bogeys on 12, 13, 16 and 17 before finishing with a birdie on the par 3, 18th hole to come in with a 36. Cooper Spears of Wamego finished second with a 66 and Brennen Acree of Concordia shot a 69 to finish third.
The Bullpups other four golfers, Colten Geren, Tyler Hoxie, Drew Labertew and Brock Malm, each finished with 92's, giving the McPherson contingent a four way tie for 25th place. The KSHSAA website was still having technical difficulties at press time, preventing us from passing along team scores and places of finish.
The 4A State tournament tees off next Monday, May 22nd at Wamego Country Club in Wamego.
