“It will serve as a fundraiser for our club and will hopefully be a fun activity to include in the 4-Hers' record books for the dog project.”
One fashion show is for the dogs — and their owners, of course.
Leann Johnson and Ashley Ballou lead the Dickinson County 4-H dog project, and each year, students compete with their canines in agility, obedience and more.
This year, Johnson and Ballou hope to demonstrate some fun skills as well at a new event.
The Dickinson County Kids & Canines Dog Club will host a dog fashion show at 3 p.m. Aug. 6 as part of the Central Kansas Free Fair in Abilene.
“The purpose of the fashion show is to raise awareness about the Dickinson County Kids & Canines Dog Club and as an opportunity for community involvement for our current 4-Hers enrolled in the dog project,” Johnson said. “It will serve as a fundraiser for our club and will hopefully be a fun activity to include in the 4-Hers’ record books for the dog project.”
The show will start at 3 p.m. on Aug. 6 at the Royer Band Shell in Eisenhower Park, Abilene. Categories include fashion, costume for dogs only, and coordinated costume for dogs and their owners.
“On the registration we ask the person to tell us something special about their dog and a description of the outfit that will be announced during the dog’s stage appearance,” Johnson said.
All registrants will receive a participant gift and be registered for door prizes in their respective category.
“We are not going to officially judge, but everyone who participates will be entered for a drawing to win a prize. I’m hoping to get some goodies donated from local businesses for one prize package for each category. Everyone who registers will also receive a participation prize; this will most likely be a goody bag of homemade doggie treats,” Johnson said. “We are also trying to coordinate a raffle prize that the club will be selling tickets for several weeks up to the event that we will draw a winner for at the end of the fashion show.”
Registration is open now and is available in the Dickinson County 4-H Extension office at 712 S. Buckeye Ave. in Abilene or online at http://www.dickinson.k-state.edu/central-kansas-free-fair/index.html. Mail or deliver your registration and $5 entry fee to the extension office no later than July 31. Participants will also be able to register the day of the show for $10 from 2:30-2:50pm.
“I hope it is a great big success,” Johnson said. “It is my hope the 4-Hers have fun hosting and participating in the event and that it can become a yearly event for our club.”
