The combined team of senior and junior legion players finished the weekend 3-2.

The McPherson Post 24 baseball team traveled to Omaha over the weekend to compete in the Battle of Omaha and finished with a record of 3-2.

McPherson played four pool play games with the winner of the pool advancing to bracket play. A mixture of juniors and sophomores played in the 17U tournament for McPherson.

Here are the results:

Game 1- Lakewood (Colorado)- 7  McPherson- 5

Game 2- Oswego-7  (Illinois) McPherson- 6

Game 3- Primetime 1 (Illinois)  McPherson- 9

Game 4- Northern Knights (Chicago) 0  McPherson- 5

Game 5- Clearwater (Kansas)-2  McPherson- 9

Here’s how McPherson head coach Heath Gerstner summed up the weekend.

"To start 0-2 and come back and win our next three games really speaks volumes about our kids.  We lost two extremely close games on opening day and did not feel we played our brand of baseball."

"Our kids showed some resolve and came back and really played well the following two days."

"The biggest highlight of the weekend was probably beating the Northern Knights out of Chicago. This is an all-star team that takes the best players from roughly 20 Chicago high schools. Their margin of victory over their four opponents before us was 40-6. They had kids with multiple D-1 offers and on this day our kids just out played them.  We made all the hustle plays and just competed the right way."

"Defensively we were very consistent through the weekend and played good defense for the most part, but that is really set up with good pitching and I thought Zane Myers, Chandler Wiard, Jakob Feil, Trey Hanken & Dylan Werries all really competed on the mound for us."

"Offensively Kaleb Hoppes missed hitting a single for the cycle in our final game on Saturday. He is really seeing the ball well."

The juniors are at home on Tuesday against Hutchinson, with start times at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. The seniors travel to Hutchinson on Tuesday for a single seven inning game at 7 p.m.
