TOPEKA — The McPherson 18U tennis team shined bright against some of the best competition in the Midwest at the Missouri Valley 18U Advanced Junior Team Tennis Championships on Thursday in Topeka.

The McPherson 18U team consisted of former McPherson High state champion Ellea Ediger, current McPherson High state champions Nolan Schrader and Kaden Stewart, McPherson High state medalists Andrew Snell, Jarrod Nowak, and Maisie Edmonson, along with Salina’s Lily Perrin.

Going up against teams from Oklahoma City, Kansas City, and St. Louis, McPherson proved they belonged on the big stage by taking second.

“The team played really well against some tough competition,” coach Tom Perrin said. “Every player made big contributions. Jarrod going 3-0 in his matches was very impressive.”

McPherson opened the event against Quail Creek, and the eventual champions from Oklahoma City dispatched McPherson, 4-1. The lone win for McPherson came from Schrader and Nowak in boy’s doubles, where the duo won in a super tiebreaker, 18-16.

McPherson rebounded against Tennis West (Kansas City) for an easy 4-1 victory. Nowak picked up a win in boy’s singles, Schrader and Stewart scored a point in boy’s doubles, Ediger and Edmonson won in girl’s doubles, and Edmonson and Snell picked up a win in mixed doubles.

In the final match, McPherson squeezed out a 3-2 victory over Missouri Athletic Club (St. Louis) to finish second. Snell and Stewart got McPherson on the board with a win at boy’s doubles, Ediger and Perrin notched a point with a win at girl’s doubles, and Nowak and Perrin secured the final point in mixed doubles for the win.

The McPherson 18U team finished its season in Topeka. Next action for McPherson tennis is the start of the girl’s season on Aug. 24 in Hesston.
