Spooky stories

Looking for a chance to get away and relax during the lunch break? The McPherson Public Library is offering a lunchtime podcast listening program on the first and third Tuesdays of every month.

The group will meet from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. and listen to a selected episode of the podcast “Lore”, hosted by Aaron Mahnke. All episodes run under 30 minutes.

The first listening session will be held on Sept. 5. Participants can bring their own lunch, or simply just relax and listen. Water will be provided.

Lore is an award-winning, critically-acclaimed podcast about true life tales that have a darker side; exposing the people places and creatures that are the source of urban legends. Listening to the stories with others is reminiscent of sitting around a campfire, but with climate control.

“I know that people don’t always have the chance to go home for lunch, but it is still a good idea to get away from the office and focus on something else besides work. Listening to a podcast in a relaxing environment is an ideal way to shift your focus for a while. Plus, a story driven podcast like Lore is great for the imagination.” says Shannon Brake, marketing and communications manager at the library.

More details about the Lore podcast can be found at www.lorepodcast.com.

Meet an artist

The McPherson Public Library will host a closing reception for artist Shannon Trevethan from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 27. Trevethan’s still-lifes in oil are currently displayed in the library meeting room.

Trevethan, a native of Washington state, discovered her passion for oil painting while pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Fort Hays State University. The subject matter of her work now fluctuates between plein air landscapes and figurative studio paintings based on still life compositions and collage.

Trevethan currently serves as director of the Deines Cultural Center in Russell, and shows regularly in galleries across the region. She frequently participates in live demonstrations, and holds workshops on painting and printmaking for children and adults.
