Coffee is served up in a heartbeat at the newest drive-through coffee shop in McPherson, located south of Central Christian College of Kansas at 1200 S. Main St. Tara Kemp, manager of Heartbeat Coffee, said the shop is expected to open in the fall of 2017, hopefully by the beginning of October. Hal Hoxie, president of Central Christian College, initially spoke to Kemp on the idea of the coffee shop last year. "He said we needed to find someone interested in starting the project. We had been thinking about it, but the idea came alive in the spring of 2017," Kemp said. The mission of the coffee shop is to serve quality coffee on a quick and consistent basis. "We want the customers to have their drinks in a heartbeat," Kemp said. The coffee shop is owned by Central Christian Ventures, which helps start up businesses under the college. Students learn about entrepreneurship and build up experience in the industry, while still in a collegiate environment. For faculty and students, the shop offers them coffee close at hand, as well as a discount. In the future, Kemp hopes to expand the coffee shop into more than just a drive-through business. “We would like to open up more space to have it as a student hang out so they have somewhere else to go on campus to work on group projects, as well as enjoying a coffee drink too,” Kemp said. “We’re really excited to serve the community one cup at a time.”
