"This team is focused on getting better and that's what we are going to work on tomorrow."
ROSE HILL — The McPherson High School soccer team went on the road for the second time this week and came away from Rose Hill with a 3-2 victory. The win evens the Bullpups record at 1-1.
Mac controlled the ball early as they possessed it nearly 70% of the time but couldn't convert that into points until Darrius Armstrong got the Pups scoring started, off of a Jael Jaime assist. Shortly after Devin Cape smashed a shot into the top corner from outside 18 ft. to give the Bullpups a 2-0 half time lead and himself a nice birthday present.
Rose Hill's first goal came on a free kick early in the second half to cut the score to 2-1. Late in the game Armstrong found Connor Williams inside, who made a simple tap in to pad the Pups score at 3-1. Rose Hill wasn't done though, as they put a ball in the net with just seven seconds left to play to reduce the margin of victory for McPherson to one.
Mac had 11 shots on goal while goalie Nathan Lloyd made five saves.
"Offensively we've got to use our possession to create better scoring chances and take more shots," said Chris Adrian, head coach for the Bullpups. "Defensively we have got to be much more composed and stop giving teams easy opportunities to score. Devin Cape had a great game on defense and Drew Schrader did a really nice job in the midfield. We were able to get him more involved in our build up play compared to the Newton game. It's a good win and beating Rose Hill is a nice accomplishment but this team is focused on getting better and that's what we are going to work on tomorrow."
The McPherson junior varsity picked up a shut out win 4-0. Cody Achilles scored two goals and had one assist, Marcel Horstcamp and Zach Wash each scored a goal and Carson Stone picked up one assist.
McPherson is on the road again next week with a Tuesday trip down to Maize South High School for the start of a multi-team tournament that has them playing Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Pups fans will finally get to see them in action at home on Tuesday, Sept. 12 as they host Winfield at McPherson Stadium with kick off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
