Edmonson and Bruce finished 4-0 for the tournament to take first place in the doubles bracket.
LINDSBORG — Led by the doubles team of Maisie Edmonson and Taylor Bruce, the McPherson High School tennis team finished in first place in the Smoky Valley Invitational tennis tournament on Saturday in Lindsborg. Edmonson and Bruce finished 4-0 for the tournament to take first place in the doubles bracket.
The other doubles team of Ashley Achilles and Madison Schmidt went 1-4 to finish eight while CeAnna Allen went 3-1 to finish third and Rachel Carlson went 2-2 to finish fourth in singles play. This was a completely shuffled lineup for coach Tyler Brown and it paid dividends with capturing the tournament title.
"The team bounced back from the Salina Central Invite as we took first place today and everyone contributed," said Brown. "Three of our four entries made it to the semifinals and we also were able to get wins over teams that could very well be in our regional. For all six girls playing a new role today I was extremely proud of their performance."
McPherson finished with 72 points, four ahead of second place Wichita Independent who had 68. Buhler was third with 60, followed by Marysville, Smoky Valley, Pratt, Sterling and Colby.
"With this lineup every one of our girls came into the tournament with a zero and zero record," Brown said. "But it's not always about records, it's about being a better tennis player by the end of the day and I felt we did exactly that; we got better today. This still may not be our lineup at the end of the year but more importantly we are continuing to grow and improve as a team."
