Taco Tuesday is Mt. Hope Sanctuary's major fundraiser for the upcoming year to help with the cost of supplies at the facility. The event is held twice each year, once in April and once in September.
“It is our most successful fundraiser. We hope it continues to grow and we have lots of great sponsors,” said Julie Holloway, executive director of Mt. Hope Sanctuary. “The fundraiser started many years ago as a way to make money, have fun and promote and engage the public about Mt. Hope.”
The semi-annual Taco Tuesday will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 26 for lunch; and again from 5 to 7 p.m. for dinner. Free will donations will be accepted for both meals. The dinner is located at Trinity Lutheran Church at 119 N. Elm St. in McPherson
A bake sale is also held during the event. Volunteers wishing to test their skill can bring baked goods — Holloway said no one will be turned away.
The dinner will offer tacos, taco salad, nachos homemade desserts, water, tea and orange soda. New this year to the dinner will be beef, chicken and pork options for the taco fillings.
Mt. Hope Sanctuary is a faith-based nonprofit organization that serves as a transitional home for women and their children to get back on their feet if they find themselves in difficult times.
Holloway said the women have to be ready to make a drastic change in their lives in order to transition. Mt. Hope Sanctuary is not a homeless shelter, but a place for women to become successful again.
"We are here to allow those women to successfully go through this program. We teach them life skills and in the beginning of their stay, they have a goal that we have them set.
A few of those would be spiritual, physical, career, education — those types of things," Holloway said.
The women live at Mt. Hope Sanctuary rent free, but are asked to help cover food costs.
The organization relies heavily on donors, individual donations and volunteers.
"We love our volunteers that help, or when a group calls and says, 'Hey, we want to do something for you, what can we do?'" she said.
