1. See a concert
At 7 p.m. Oct.1, at the McPherson Opera House, the Dyck Arboretum of the Plains Prairie Window Concert Series will launch its 2017-18 season with Pokey LaFarge and his big band returning to our stage with their hot sound of old timey swing, early jazz, ragtime blues and classic folk. Tickets for this concert are by reservation at www.mcphersonoperahouse.org or by calling the Opera House box office at 620-241-1952. Cost of tickets is $33 or $27.
2. Learn to paint
NEWTON — From 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 23, participants will learn how to paint a still life with bouquet flowers in the “Floral Bouquets in Pastel” workshop, said instructor Constance Gehring. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12 to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Third Thursday events are 6 to 8 p.m.

3. Work with clay
LINDSBORG — The Bethany College Art Department is hosting a ceramics workshop in the Mingenback Art Gallery with guest artists Mark and Bambi Freeman, at 9 a.m. Sept. 23. An artist reception will be held at 4 p.m. with a gallery talk by the artists at 4:30 p.m.
The workshop will incorporate handbuilding techniques in ceramic work and how to enrich surfaces with underglaze decoration. The Freemans’ exhibit, titled “Interfuse” is on display through Sept. 23 in the Mingenback Art Gallery on Bethany College’s campus.
These events are free and open to the public.
