McPherson High School hosted its cross-country invitational at Rolling Acres Golf Club Thursday.

On a hot and windy Thursday afternoon ill-suited for golf, Rolling Acres Golf Club was converted into cross-country course as McPherson High School hosted its invitational meet. The Bullpups varsity girls finished in second place while the varsity boys brought home third. Buhler was the winner of the varsity girls' division and Hutchinson captured the varsity boys.

Natalie Hedlund was the top finisher for the varsity girls, finishing in third place with a time of 23:28.73. Five other girls medaled by finishing in the top 20. Isaiah Moyer was the Pups boys highest finisher, taking ninth place at 19:28.16. Two other varsity boys medaled as well.

"Overall I thought it was a good, solid meet for us to get a feel of what regionals will be like since we are hosting it this year," said McPherson coach Aspen Lott. "It was very hot and very windy. Before the kids ran I told them that today was most likely not a day to smash their PR's (personal records) but a day to push each other and place well as a team while gaining experience for regionals."

On the junior varsity level the Bullpups girls won first place overall, beating Salina South by 11 points. the JV boys finished third behind first place Buhler and runner-up Hays.

All five Pups JV girls finished in the top 20, led by Courtney Eickbush with a time of 26:40.03, good enough for third place. Cody Achilles led the McPherson JV boys with a second place finish at 19:59.44.

McPherson's top three finishes in the varsity division should have been good enough to qualify them for the regionals, according to Lott.

"I believe the kids did exactly that (qualify for regionals) with placing as a team in the top three for each race," Aspen remarked. "The majority of the team also gained faster times this year compared to last year on this course despite the weather conditions this year; so exciting to see their growth as well. We are ready for some cooler weather at Newton next week."

McPherson's next run will be at the Newton Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Newton Centennial Park. The meet gets underway at 9:30 a.m.
