"It was a fun weekend!"
NEWTON — The McPherson High School volleyball team went 5-1 Saturday and finished in second place in the Newton Invitational. Mac's only loss came at the hands of the host team in the second round 25-22, 20-25, 19-25.
The Bullpups had two-set wins over Andover Central, Wichita Heights, Eisenhower and Andale before a final round three-set win over Salina South. Mac finished second behind Newton, who was 6-0 on the day and ahead of Andale in third, Eisenhower, Wichita Heights, Andover Central and Salina South.
"Last match of the day we were out of gas for sure," said McPherson coach Christy Doile. "We went three sets with Salina South. Thankfully we put the energy back on the court to win the last set."
Three McPherson players made the All-Tournament Team, Elle Barrett, Cassie Cooks and Jaycee Burghart. Barrett had 49 kills on the day while Cassie Cooks had 25. Michaela Bowers finished with 49 digs and Burghart notched 124 assists.
"Someone I thought really played well and deserved some attention this weekend was Andrea Sweat," Doile pointed out. "She led us in hitting percentage. She scored a ton of points with her attacks and blocks. I was proud of her for really taking what we worked on in practice and actively applied it to the matches. I was super proud of their (team) effort and their coachability this weekend. It was a fun weekend."
Sweat finished the day with 44 kills and eight blocks.
Next up for the Bullpups is a triangular at Augusta High School on Tuesday with the host school and El Dorado. Action gets underway at 5 p.m. for both varsity and JV.
