"Little River played a good match tonight. I'd like to see them again."
CANTON — The Canton-Galva High School volleyball team hosted a triangular Tuesday night that included cross-county rival Little River, and Peabody-Burns. The Eagles split matches on the night, losing to the Redskins in three sets while sweeping the Warriors in two. Little River beat Peabody-Burns in the opening match of the night.
Canton-Galva opened its match with Little River with a convincing 25-19 win in the first set, seemingly gaining momentum for the match. The Redskins had different ideas as they stormed back in the second set with a 25-13 win to send the contest to the third set.
Little River jumped out to a lead in set three before Canton-Galva tied things at 19. The Eagles then got the edge before the Redskins pulled into a tie at 23 all. Little River then put the match away winning the next two points for a 25-23 win, to secure a 2-1 victory.
"We lost a tough match tonight to Little River," said Eagles coach Kaitlyn Bressie. "We didn't make a bunch of errors but we weren't able to put the ball away soon enough. Little River played a good match tonight. I'd like to see them again."
In the final match of the night Canton-Galva beat Peabody-Burns in straight-sets 25-21, 25-18 for the 2-0 win. Each set was a back and forth battle with the Eagles pulling it out in the end.
"It wasn't the best match we played all season but a win is a win," Bressie commented. "It was nice to get a league win tonight. I saw improvements in our team but we are getting to the point of the season when improving is no longer our goal. From here on out we have to go out and be able to perform at a high level every night and do it consistently."
Kaysha Unruh and Jayci Mastre each had 16 assists on the night with Unruh adding 11 aces serving. Tia Moddelmog scored 11 kills with five solo blocks. Ashley Nightingale notched 21 digs and led the Eagles in serve receives while Grace Klinkerman was credited with five solo blocks as well.
The Eagles will host their Canton-Galva Invitational Saturday at Canton-Galva High School, that will include 2A Goessel among other area teams. A full schedule will be available Wednesday evening.
