"We won! No second place this weekend."
SPRING HILL — The McPherson High School volleyball team traveled over 300 miles round-trip over the weekend to play in the Spring Hill Invitational and it was well worth the trip. The Bullpups went 5-0 on the day Saturday and came home with the tournament title, losing just one set in five matches.
The Bullpups opened things up with a 25-18, 25-22 sweep of Kansas City Piper, a 25-19, 25-21 win over the host school Spring Hill and a 25-19, 29-27 victory over Blue Valley Southwest. In the semifinals the Pups beat Paola in their only three-set match 26-24, 24-26, 27-25. They then swept Kansas City Turner 25-5, 25-13 to complete the tournament sweep.
"We won," exclaimed Mac coach Christy Doile. "No second place this weekend and McPherson varsity volleyball hasn't won an invite for quite some time. We've won substates, which we are super thankful for, but not in invite or tournament lately."
Elle Barrett led the team in kills with 49 with Andrea Sweat adding 38 and Cassie Cooks contributing 29. Jaycee Burghart continued to dominate in assists collecting 111 for the weekend. Michaela Bowers served six aces, Cooks had five and Burghart finished with four. Sweat was credited with five blocks and Bailea Crist led the Pups in digs with 33.
"Bowers received amazingly well this weekend," Doile said. "Cooks, Sweat and Barrett led our offense and Burghart did a great job of running our offense to score points. We had some great battles, especially with Paola and Blue Valley Southwest."
McPherson goes on the road Tuesday for a triangular at Circle with Buhler being the third team. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. The Bullpups then return home Saturday as they host the 10-team McPherson Invitational at The Roundhouse Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.
