Viega, LLC and CertainTeed are showcasing new expansions and equipment as part of McPherson's Manufacturing Day events this week.

Jennifer Burch, executive director of McPherson Chamber of Commerce, said this national event started around six or seven years ago, but McPherson has been celebrating it for five years now.

The McPherson Chamber of Commerce along with McPherson Industrial Development Company, have partnered with Viega, Central Plastics, Bradbury and CertainTeed this year to celebrate industrial success throughout McPherson County.

"It is a celebration that motivates people to take the initiative to learn about manufacturing, specifically about what manufacturing is today," Burch said. "It's also a way to engage young people into careers in areas that are in manufacturing."

Open houses this year include:

— The Bradbury Co., 1200 E. Cole St. in Moundridge, starting at 2 p.m. Oct. 5

— Viega, LLC, 2211 Viega Ave. in McPherson, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 6

— Central Plastics, 811 W. First St. in McPherson, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 6

— CertainTeed, 873 N. Hickory St. in McPherson, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 25

High schools, colleges and technical schools are all invited to attend events at each locationMcPherson dedicates the month of October to manufacturing due to the large number of industrial companies in the area.

"Viega was the first ones to bring it to our attention about this celebration — they've been the leaders and initiators of having this celebration in McPherson county," Burch explained.

The McPherson Chamber of Commerce hopes to expose students and the general population to what is behind the doors of these companies.

"Every year, we have a new audience of students we try to accommodate by showcasing our industries and opportunities we have," Burch said. "A lot of the time people think it's just a big building, they never quite understand the magnitude of what goes on behind the doors, its a great education piece not only for students, but for the general population for our area to gain a greater appreciation for products companies make and how far reaching they are."
