Bullpup JV down Cougars 2-1.
SALINA — Up 3-0 at halftime, the McPherson High School soccer team held on against Salina South Thursday for a 3-2 win. The Bullpups improve to 8-3 on the season with the victory.
Darrius Armstrong got Mac on the board first with two minutes of kickoff as he got behind the Cougars defense for the one-on-one to give McPherson the early lead. Thirteen minutes later the Salina South goalkeeper took his eye off of a pass back with pressure being applied by Connor Williams and the ball rolled between his legs into the net for an own goal and the Pups led 2-0.
Taking advantage of a frustrated Cougars team, Britton Haigh scored a great volley off a Devin Cape free kick to send the Bullpups to the break up 3-0. The only thing left was to hold on in the second half.
"The game couldn't have started any better for us," said Mac coach Chris Adrian. "But we knew the game was far from over at halftime because Salina has a lot of talent o their team."
The Cougars brought that talent out in the second half, scoring two goals at the 75-minute mark to make things interesting down the stretch. But Pups goalie Nathan Lloyd, who had six saves on the night, turned away Salina South and didn't allow another goal, giving McPherson the 3-2 win.
Drew Schrader and Devin Cape each had assists in the game. McPherson had a total of 10 shots on goal.
"Although I was frustrated that we let them back in the game by giving up the goals, I was pleased with how the team responded and kept their composure at the end of the game," Adrian remarked. "It's a situation we can learn from which will help us down the road. Salina South is a good team and this was a really nice win for the boys."
In JV action, Mac led by a Carson Stone goal off an assist by Mark Fincher with five minutes to play when the Cougars tied things up. Three minutes later Cody Achilles got the game winner to give McPherson a 2-1 win and a Pups sweep over the Cougars.
"It was great to see the passion they (JV) played with," Adrian said. "It would have been really easy to hand their heads after giving up a late equalizer but they came out on fire after that goal."
Another big match up is looming on Monday as McPherson returns home to host the Salthawks of Hutchinson. JV kicks off at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity at 6:30 p.m. at McPherson Stadium.
