If you're going to lose make sure it is to the eventual champion. That is exactly what the McPherson High School volleyball team did Saturday at the McPherson Invitational Tournament, losing only to Bishop Carroll in the semifinals. Carroll went on to win the Invitational title while McPherson beat Goddard in the third-place match 25-14, 25-23.
The Bullpups muscled their way through pool play beating Salina South 23-25, 25-11, 25-23 to open the day. They then breezed by Hillsboro and Junction City in straights sets before spotting Nickerson a set 22-25 before finishing them off 25-19, 25-17 to earn their way into the semifinals.
"Great team effort with different kids contributing along the way," stated McPherson coach Christy Doile. "Beating Nickerson in pool play and Goddard in the third-place game were our best wins of the day."
Elle Barrett led Mac with 68 kills. Cassie Cooks added 33 and Andrea Sweat chipped in 24. Jaycee Burghart notched another 134 assists while also serving for three aces. Barrett added four aces and Bailea Crist had three. Michaela Bowers got 44 digs with Crist adding 36, Burghart 27 and Barrett 26. Sweat and Cooks collected 9 blocks each.
McPherson will be back in action Tuesday night as they travel to Clearwater for a triangular. Rose Hill will be the third team playing with a 5 p.m. scheduled start time at Clearwater High School.
