"Buhler got us when it comes to the only stat that matters and that's goals scored."
BUHLER — Two different nights, two different outcomes. Such was the case for the McPherson High School boy's soccer team as the traveled to Buhler Tuesday night and came away with a 2-1 loss. This coming off of a stellar 5-0 performance Monday night in a win over Hutchinson.
The Bullpups fall to 9-4 on the season with the loss, Coach Chris Adrian's first loss to Buhler in his eight years coaching at McPherson.
"Tough loss for sure tonight," Adrian said. "Statistically we did well, taking three times as many shots, had a five to one advantage in corner kicks and had 61% possession of the ball. Unfortunately Buhler got us when it comes to the only stat that matters and that's goals scored."
The Pups and the Crusaders were scoreless through 65 minutes of play when Devin Cape snapped the tie with a goal off a Britton Haigh assist. The lead did not last long as Buhler took advantage of some miscommunication by McPherson to answer back and tie things up at one apiece. Buhler then secured the win on a breakaway with just three minutes left in the contest.
"The heartbreaking manner in which we lost this game will do one of two things to this team; either they come to practice tomorrow with their heads down and feeling sorry for themselves or they will show up early to practice with a fire burning, ready to work at improving so this type of result doesn't happen again," remarked Adrian. "I've got a good hunch I know what kind of response I'm going to get from the team tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it."
McPherson had eight shots on goal and goalie Nathan Lloyd made three saves. The JV team came out on top, winning 3-1 on two goals by Luke Brossard and one by Cody Achilles. Florian Gergs and Cael Bauer each had an assist.
"I was really proud of the effort the boys gave tonight, especially after such a quick turnaround playing the night before," concluded Adrian.
McPherson will enjoy a day off Wednesday before returning to action Thursday night. Mac will host Valley Center at McPherson Stadium with the JV kicking off at 4 p.m. and the varsity at 5:30 p.m.
