The McPherson High School soccer team is state-bound after defeating Buhler last Thursday for the regional championship. As a result, the Bullpups earned this week’s Great Plains Federal Credit Union Team of the Week award, presented by the McPherson Sentinel. The soccer team will be in the running for the Fall Sports Team of the Year award at the conclusion of the fall season.
The Bullpups were led on offense by a gutsy performance from sophomore Britton Haigh, who scored two goals in the 3-1 McPherson win. Down 1-0 at halftime, Haigh score two early goals in the second half to give the Bullpups the lead. Sophomore Samie Jaime put the game out of reach with a goal directly off a corner kick, concluding the scoring for both teams.
With the regional championship in the past, the Bullpups are hoping momentum carries into Tuesday’s state quarterfinal match at Louisburg.
“Confidence is sky high after that Buhler game and we are looking to build off that performance,” head coach Chris Adrian said. “We are going to have to continue to do what we do best, which is pass the ball and move it around.”
Louisburg enters with an identical 13-5-0 record as McPherson, but the teams are a bit different personnel wise. Louisburg has 10 seniors that will see playing time while the Bullpups start seven sophomore and only have six seniors on the roster.
With experience and home field advantage on the side of Louisburg, the Bullpups will need to play fearlessly and bring their A-game.
“Louisburg is a really good team and has a ton of speed in the attack,” Adrian said. “Our defense is going to have to be ready and on their toes.”
Game time in Louisburg is scheduled for 5 p.m. The winner of this game faces the winner of Andover Central (15-3-0) and Hays (12-6-0).
