LINDSBORG — Dr. Joyce Pigge, the Chair of the Bethany College Political Science Department, is one of three Mt. Vernon Township High School graduates honored as the 2017 Distinguished Alumni during the annual Alumni dinner, Nov. 11, on the MVTHS campus in Mt. Vernon, IL. Dr. Pigge is in her 48th year of teaching political science at Bethany College.

“I am forever grateful to the four English teachers I had while attending Mt. Vernon Township High School,” says Pigge. “We read everything from Shakespeare to Great Expectations, along with rigorous grammar lessons and diagramming sentences. They prepared me for future educational endeavors.”

At Bethany College, Pigge teaches classes in government, constitutional history, constitutional law, international relations, comparative government and sports law. She has served on numerous committees and actively volunteers her time for athletic and student activities.

“As the Chair of the Bethany College Political Science Department, Dr. Pigge has invested in the lives of thousands of Bethany students over her 48 years of service to the college,” says Bethany College President Will Jones. “Bethany College is known for producing successful professionals who love God and love people. Joyce’s investment of time and talent has much to do with this rich legacy.”

Pigge helped to found and coach several athletic teams for Bethany.

The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference has benefited from her leadership and volunteerism, including multiple terms of service as the conference’s treasurer and representative to the National Executive Committee of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Joyce received the Bethany College Teaching Award in 1991, the Bethany Distinguished Service Award in 2003, the Meredith Humphreys Teaching and Service to Students Award in 2006, and the NAIA Wally Schwartz Award as Faculty Athletics Representative of the Year in 2009.

She was inducted into the NAIA's Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service in 2015 and was named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Faculty Athletics Representative of the Year for 2016-17.

In addition to serving as the Faculty Athletics Representative, Joyce announces for Swede football, volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball. She has also kept the official score book for volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball competitions.

According to the Mt. Vernon Township High School mission statement, the school provides challenging educational and social experiences that will create in all students’ lifelong learning and responsible citizenship in a diverse and changing world.
