Shelley Ann (Penland) Walle, of McPherson, was born May 8, 1960, in Topeka, to Judge Gene B. Penland and Joyce A. (Renner) Penland. She died Nov. 15, 2017, in Wichita. She graduated from Salina South High School in 1978 and attended Kansas State University before joining the workforce.
Shelley married Gene L. Walle of Culver, Kansas on June 3, 1989. Gene was a U.S. Navy veteran who served on the USS Missouri. Shelley worked as a night-shift lead at Ferguson Production, Inc. in McPherson. Her husband also worked as a night-shift machinist at Mid West Industries in McPherson. They were happy together and purchased a home on North Walnut Street in McPherson, where they befriended stray cats and adopted a little Yorkie, Ernie Ray. They eventually moved into the McPherson Health and Rehabilitation Center in January, 2014. There, Shelley and Gene renewed their vows on their 25th wedding anniversary, presided by Shelley’s father who was a retired District Court Judge in Salina. Sixteen days later, on June 19th, 2014, Shelley’s husband, Gene, passed away after a six-month struggle with cancer, with Shelley at his side, as always.
Eleven years earlier, on Sept. 22, 2003, at age 43, Shelley had suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhagic stroke (ruptured brain aneurysm) which stopped her heart five times in transport to Wichita. By the grace of God and by the heroic efforts of her husband and medical team and by the prayers of family and friends, she survived after being given a one percent chance to survive. Although Shelley was unable to work or drive again, with Gene’s constant devotion, she kept her inner strength and faith to relearn how to stand, walk, talk, write, laugh, tease and live again.
As noted above, Shelley was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Gene L. Walle, and by her father, Judge Gene B. Penland. She is survived by her mother, Joyce A. Penland of Salina; sister Amy K. (Penland) Jorgensen and her brother-in-law Stuart S. Jorgensen of Denver, Colorado; her beloved nieces, Lauren A. Jorgensen of Madison, Wisconsin and Brooke K. Jorgensen of Englewood, Colorado; and by her aunt, Mary B. (Renner) Clonce of Clinton, Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday November 18, 2017 at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Memorials to the Salina Animal Shelter.
