YODER — Choosing a second location was a tricky decision for Dr. Andrea Herrera at Great Plains Family Medicine in McPherson, but with good connections and voiced concerns for more healthcare, the right location in Yoder finally came along.

Rather than boosting her business with another location, Herrera wants to focus on bringing affordable healthcare to a new area.

"There is an underserved population in that area (Yoder) that is in need of healthcare. This will provide them with local care so they won't have to travel," Herrera said.

Herrera's mother grew up in the area, which made her feel at ease in adding a second location there.

The Yoder location at 3406 Red Rock Road, will offer the same services Herrera provides in McPherson.

"The setup in Yoder will be like our office in McPherson, following a direct primary care model. This will include the benefits we offer members here like access, phone calls, texting and email directly with the provider," Herrera said.

With renovations underway, Herrera is hopeful the new location will be open by February 2018 and she is taking pre-enrollments now, as space is limited.

"We ask people to call our McPherson location for questions or to pre-enroll," Herrera explained.

With a few buildings in Yoder in mind, one in particular sparked her interest.

"We settled on a building that is currently empty, but that has had a colorful past. It was originally used as a blacksmith shop, but has also housed retail businesses like a craft store and a grocery store. It is centrally located in Yoder and is easily accessible," she said.

The new location will also come with a new provider at the practice.

"Our provider is Bobbi Schrag, who is a nurse practitioner. She spent time with me when she was a student, so she is familiar with our clinic and how we do things. Bobbi also has connections to the Yoder community and has long thought the area needs primary care to complement the birthing center that is there currently," Herrera said.
