LINDSBORG --- Smoky Valley High School wants to be wrestling in Salina come state tournament time. The Vikings are without state experience on their roster, but the talent is there.

Juniors Ethan Wampler and Cort Elliott will be a force on the mat in their respective weight groups. Wampler posted a 19-14 record in the 220 pounds weight group, while Elliott was second on the team in wins with an 18-20 record at 170 pounds.

Juniors Chase Pywell (126), Matthew Adams (152), Jon Burks (195), and Nate Grossland (285) all won 10 matches last season. Sophomore Dax Hopp (160) also won 10 matches, while sophomore DeVon VanFosson at 106 was third on the team in wins with 11.

Returning eight wrestles with success at the varsity level, the Vikings could be making some noise come February.

“We return a good group of juniors,” head coach Ben Elliott said. “We will rely heavily on their leadership and that of senior Dylan Archuleta. We are looking to reload and fill weight classes left vacant by a large, graduated senior class.”

The Vikings open up their season on Dec. 2 in a tournament hosted by Riley County High School. Andover, Bonner Springs, Clay Center Community, Emporia, Larned, and Riley County will also be in attendance.
