NEWTON — The McPherson High School swimming team is off to a hot start on the season. The Bullpups opened the year with a first-place finish at the Newton Invitational on Thursday. McPherson tallied 386 total points while the next closest team was Andover Central with 245. McPherson sophomore Justus Hampton (below/above etc.) won the 100-yard butterfly. The Bullpups also had first-place finishes from Will Powers in the 200-yard medley relay, Powers in the 200-yard individual medley, Powers in the 100-yard backstroke, Dawson VanGoethem in the 50-yard freestyle, VanGoethem in the 100-yard freestyle, and championship relay teams in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay, and the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Bullpups are back in action on Saturday when they compete at the Maize Invitational at Wichita Northwest YMCA.
