Beryl Darwyn Thomas, 82, passed away evening Nov. 26, 2017 in his home. He was born on Feb. 3, 1935 in Courtland, Kansas to Paul Dennis and Edna Grace (Tantlinger) Thomas. He attended school in Courtland until he graduated in 1953.
He served as a helicopter mechanic in the U.S. Army from March 1957 to February 1959 during the Korean War, and then in the National Guard for 20 years afterward.
Beryl held several jobs which included being a mechanic, drug store courier, wood furniture maker and custodian. Some of the things that he enjoyed doing were dancing (especially the jig with his dad and the square dance. Beryl also taught his four oldest kids to two-step while they stood on his feet), playing pool, woodworking and craft making, and traveling (especially to visit his kids and grandchildren).
On Oct. 24, 1959 he married Glenna Joyce Johnson. Together they had five children: Terry, Tonia, Travis, Tia, and Thad.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dennis and Duwayne Thomas and a grandson Matthew Boyer.
He is survived by five children, Terry (Jennifer) Thomas of Federal Way, Washington, Tonia (Thomas) Spruhan of Gillette, Wyoming, Travis Thomas of Moorcroft, Wyoming, Tia (JD) Robinson of Hannibal, Missouri, and Thad (Danelle) Fields of Harvard, Nebraska; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; sister Evelyn Love of Belleville; nieces and nephews, other relative and friends.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Courtland Covenant Church, 505 Republic St., Courtland with Dwight Garman, officiating.
Inurnment will follow the funeral service at the Courtland Cemetery, rural Courtland.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Detail, Ft. Riley.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Friends may visit the family prior and following the services at the church.
