CANTON — The Canton-Galva girls basketball team had a miserable performance on offense Tuesday night against Inman, scoring just 14 points the entire contest. Friday night, the Eagles bounced back in dramatic fashion, defeating Centre 44-38 in overtime.

As a result, the Eagles are this week’s Great Plains Federal Credit Union Team of the Week, presented by the McPherson Sentinel.

The Eagles, who have just two seniors on the roster, will go through growing pains as a young team this year. Head coach Dean Scott was pleased to see his team mature by throwing Tuesday’s performance out the window, and picking up a hard-earned win the following game.

“Tuesday night we had a very poor offensive output,” Scott said. “I was glad on Friday to see them push that out of their minds, and our shots began to fall.”

Canton-Galva led by four after the first quarter, but Centre cut the deficit to one point at halftime. The Eagles won the third quarter decisively, 12-4, thanks to great ball movement and knocking down open shots.

But the youthful Eagles faltered in the fourth quarter, as Centre closed regulation on a 13-4 run to force overtime.

“Our girls took some shots they shouldn’t have been taking with a lead in the fourth quarter,” Scott said. “We have a very young basketball team, and they will learn through experience.”

Similarly to how the Eagles overcome a bad game Tuesday night, they were able to respond from a bad fourth quarter as well. Scott said the Eagles were locked in offensively and defensively in overtime, resulting in a six-point win.

The Eagles, now 2-4 on the year, will look to close out their pre-Christmas schedule on a winning streak when they host Wakefield on Tuesday.

“We’ll need to play good defense and create some open shots,” Scott said.

The CGHS boys were also in action Friday night against Centre, but dropped a 55-33 decision. The Eagles went into halftime tied at 28, but were outscored by 22 points in the second half.

Jonah Sargent led the Eagles, now 1-5, with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Both Canton-Galva schools are back in action on Tuesday against Wakefield.
