Bowl season firing at rapid pace

Five Big 12 teams are in action from Tuesday through Thursday as bowl mania starts to get really good. TCU and Stanford in the Alamo Bowl is perhaps the most intriguing matchup of all, but Kansas State fans are looking forward to Tuesday night’s Cactus Bowl against UCLA. Matt and Gallagher aren’t off to hot starts this bowl season, but at least it’s competitive.

Matt 6-8

Gallagher 5-9

Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl

West Virginia (7-5) vs. Utah (6-6)

Gallagher- Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham is 10-1 in bowl games in his career, while West Virginia will be playing without starting quarterback Will Grier due to injury. 31-27 Utah

Matt- West Virginia shouldn’t lose but it’s bowl season so anything can happen. 49-24 WVU

Quick Lane Bowl

Northern Illinois (8-4) vs Duke (6-6)

Gallagher- This should be a defensive battle between two evenly-matched opponents. Northern Illinois is missing its leading running back due to injury, so slight edge Duke. 21-17 Duke

Matt- ACC baby. 31-28 Duke

Cactus Bowl

UCLA (6-6) vs. Kansas State (7-5)

Gallagher- This game reminds me of last year when Kansas State faced No. 1 overall pick Myles Garrett and Texas A&M in its bowl game. This year, the Wildcats are facing potential No. 1 overall pick Josh Rosen and UCLA. I think the ‘Cats get it done for the second straight year. 33-28 KSU

Matt- UCLA wins if Rosen plays. 35-31 UCLA

Walk-On’s Independence Bowl

Southern Miss (8-4) vs. Florida State (6-6)

Gallagher- Does Florida State want to be playing in the Independence Bowl? I’m going with Florida State simply because they have more talent, but I don’t have a lot of confidence in the ‘Noles. 27-14 FSU

Matt- Despite all the turmoil my ‘Noles should win. 41-24 FSU

New Era Pinstripe Bowl

Iowa (7-5) vs. Boston College (7-5)

Gallagher- Two teams that love to run the ball and play defense. Should be a competitive game, but playing in New York gives Boston College more of a home-field advantage. 21-20 BC

Matt- Dad was a Hawkeye. 28-27 Iowa

Foster Farms Bowl

Purdue (6-6) vs. Arizona (7-5)

Gallagher- If you haven’t seen Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate play yet this season, the Foster Farms Bowl is your last chance. Tate is a legit dual-threat, leading his team in passing and rushing. He’ll probably be getting some preseason Heisman Trophy love this offseason. Led by Tate, Wildcats roll over Purdue. 34-17 Arizona

Matt- Purdue much better than they’re record. 30-28 Purdue

Academy Sports and Outdoors Texas Bowl

Missouri (7-5) vs. Texas (6-6)

Gallagher- Texas was supposed to win 10 games and compete for the Big 12 championship. Instead, they’re .500 and playing in the Texas Bowl. But at least they should win! 35-31 Texas

Matt- Texas played like a top 10 team at times this year. 27-24 Texas

Military Bowl

Virginia (6-6) vs. Navy (6-6)

Gallagher- It’s only fitting that Navy wins the Military Bowl. 24-17 Navy

Matt- Cavaliers will play battleship and win. 17-14 Virginia.

Camping World Bowl

Virginia Tech (9-3) vs. Oklahoma State (9-3)

Gallagher- With three potential first round picks on offense, it’s safe to say Oklahoma State underachieved this season. However, they are a better team than Virginia Tech, so the Cowboys should end the year with their third straight 10-win season for the first in program history. 38-24 OSU

Matt- Just because Gallagher will pick the Cowboys I will take the Hokies. 35-33 Va. Tech

Valero Alamo Bowl

Stanford (9-4) vs. TCU (10-3)

Gallagher- This game could be the most entertaining of all the non-New Years 6 Bowl games. I lean toward TCU since they are playing in Texas. I’m looking forward to this one. 30-27 TCU

Matt- This one is a toss up. I will go with the Pac 12. 49-46 Stanford.

San Diego Credit Union Holiday Bowl

Michigan State (9-3) vs. Washington State (9-3)

Gallagher- A 10-win season is on the line for both these teams. Michigan State has a better defense and a more balanced offense, so I’ll roll with Sparty. 35-24 MSU

Matt- I like Mike Leach and his carefree style. Should be a good game. 40-35 WSU
