William E. Garrelts, 83, passed away early Dec. 27, 2017. He was born on Feb. 28, 1934 in McPherson to Myron Eugene and Phoebe Ann (Slough) Garrelts.
He was very active in Boy Scouts, and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. While attending Kansas State University, he became a Sigma Phi Epsilon, learned to fly in the Air Force ROTC, studied business administration and met his future wife Lois Ann Hahn. They were married on March 12, 1955, later moving to Wichita, where Bill went to work for General Casualty Company where he remained for years as Claims Manager.
Bill became the President of the Kansas Claims Association. He then studied and became a graduate of the American Insurance Institute and won the awards for Outstanding Service to the American Insurance Industry in 1986-87. Bill was also a member of the Kansas Claims Managers Council, president in 1975 and Chairman of the Arbitration Committee in 1970.
Bill was also very active in his church, serving on Church Council and singing in the choir for many years. After he retired Bill volunteered as a driver for the Red Cross, as well as at the Wichita Art Museum and Saint Francis Hospital.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents; Myron and Phoebe Garrelts. He is survived by his wife of 62 years; Lois Garrelts, children; Dr. Jim (Mary) Garrelts, Susan Garrelts, Kristen Rotramel, grandchildren; Jeff Garrelts, Scott (Emily) Garrelts, Brittany Garrelts, Jon Warren, Jennifer Warren, Danielle Rotramel, Ryan Rotramel, great-grandchildren; Ruby and Lucy Garrelts and brother; Pastor Tom (Jeanne) Garrelts.
Memorial services will be at noon on Tuesday Jan. 2 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Wichita.
