MOUNDRIDGE — The Moundridge High School boys basketball team had another close game on Tuesday against the Ell-Saline Cardinals, but came out ahead with a final score of 52-46.
“I told the guys, we don’t get style points when we win,” head coach Vance Unrau said. “We won ugly tonight, and there were just some in-game adjustments that we talked about, that we didn't do very well.”
During the first quarter, the Cats and Cardinals went back-and-forth, closing out the quarter with a narrow Wildcat lead of 13-11. Trading buckets in the second quarter, both teams continued to score, but Moundridge held on to their lead, ending the half 29-25.
“I’ve never questioned whether we played hard, because I think we play hard! I just think we sometimes don’t play smart,’” Unrau added.
Senior Noah Eichelberger was Moundridge’s leading scorer for the night with 22 points. Junior Dillon Vogts added 12. Sophomore Brady Helms finished with 10 points.
The Wildcats kept a lead throughout the game, but the Cardinals trailed behind, losing intensity after halftime, and Moundridge drew their lead to seven at the end of the third quarter, 39-32.
Senior Tel Phelps led the Ell-Saline offense with 14 points.
Moundridge, now 5-3, will face Sedgwick on Friday.
