HUTCHINSON — Can anyone slow down the McPherson High School swimming team? Five meets into the season, the answer appears to be no.
For the fifth time in as many tries, the Bullpups claimed a team title. On Tuesday, the Bullpups stormed past eight other teams to win the Hutchinson Invitational with ease.
The Bullpups tallied 407 points while second-place finisher Hutchinson managed 179.
“Didn’t swim great times, but we swam well enough to win,” head coach Matt Morrow said. “Times were off, I think, because we are still recovering from a long stretch of practice, trying to get back to what it feels like to race.”
The 200 yard medley relay team of Will Powers, Jori VanGoethem, Silas Steinert, and Dawson VanGoethem picked up the win by nearly four seconds.
The Bullpups had another first-place relay team in the 400 yard freestyle, consisting of Dawson VanGoethem, Carson Stone, Gavin Soukup, and Powers.
Individually, Powers finished first in the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard backstroke.
Other first-place finishes from the Bullpups include Dawson VanGoethem in the 50 yard backstroke and Soukup in the 200 yard freestyle.
“We had first, fourth, seventh or second, fifth, seventh or better in almost every race with both relays in strong point spots,” Morrow said. “These guys are really stepping up and swimming for the team.
“I have to give special attention to Cody Achilles,” Morrow continued. “First time swimmer swam his second 500 free of the season and pulled in a ninth-place finish.”
The Bullpups were originally scheduled to compete at the Salina South Invitational on Thursday, but the meet was postponed due to inclement weather. A makeup date is still to be announced.
Next scheduled action for the Bullpups is next Thursday at Lawrence High School. McPherson and Bishop Miege will be the only 4A schools competing in a meet full of 6A schools.
