ANDALE – Nothing came easy Friday night at Andale for the McPherson High School basketball teams.

For the second time this week, the McPherson boys delivered an undefeated team its first loss of the season, this time a 36-34 grinder that featured a game-winning jumper from Mason Alexander.

In a game where points were hard to come by, the Bullpups trailed by four in the fourth quarter but used an 8-0 run to edge ahead. Andale tied the game late, but Alexander sent the Pups back home with their ninth win in 10 tries.

Alexander finished the game with 11 points, while Ben Pyle scored all 12 of his points from beyond the arc.

The McPherson girls rode a 27-point performance from Taylor Robertson to a 50-46 win. Robertson was nearly automatic on the night, going 10 of 11 from the field.

The Bullpups trailed by three at halftime before winning the third quarter, 20-10. Andale never quit, however, and had a chance to tie or take the lead on its final possession.

But the Bullpups forced a turnover, and Robertson made a pair of free throws to improve the Bullpups to 9-1 on the season.

The girls travel to fourth-ranked Newton (5A) on Tuesday, while the boys will host Blue Valley West on Thursday in the opening round of the McPherson Invitational.
