Lawrence Free State may have entered as the No. 1 ranked team in Class 6A, but Friday night’s Bishop Carroll victory was hardly an upset.
Bishop Carroll, the sixth seed at the McPherson Invitational, delivered Free State its second loss of the season to advance to the championship game Saturday night at 7 p.m. against host McPherson.
The Golden Eagles outscored the Firebirds 14-7 in the second quarter and never surrendered their lead from there. The second half was neck and neck, with Bishop Carroll holding a 32-30 advantage.
Carsen Pracht and Tanner Mans combined to score 38 points for the Golden Eagles. Luke Evans was also crucial for Bishop Carroll, notching eight rebounds and seven assists in over 29 minutes of action.
Lawrence Free State received 16 points and eight rebounds from Garrett Luinstra, while the Firebirds lacked a second scorer in double figures.
Bishop Carroll is seeking its first MIT championship in program history, while McPherson will go for No. 24. The McPherson Roundhouse should be rocking at 7 p.m. Saturday night to witness another great high school basketball game.
