Starting Feb. 1, the McPherson Public Library ceased charging fines for overdue children’s materials. Patrons must return overdue items before they can check out other items, and the library will continue charging for costs associated with damaged or lost items.
Patrons are responsible for paying library fines which have already accrued on children’s materials checked out before Feb. 1. The new fine policy does not include items checked out from the teen collection. The library will continue sending out overdue reminders and encourages patrons to return their children’s materials on time.
The new fine policy, approved by the Library Board of Trustees in January, replaces the existing policy of 5 cents per item per day, which was instituted in 1974.
