The McPherson High School wrestling team traveled to Winfield High School on Thursday night, and left as AVCTL champions for the second time in school history after defeating both Wellington High School 55-17 and 40-27 over Winfield in a double dual match. The Bullpups now finish the season 15-1.

“I’m really proud of the kids," wrestling head coach Doug Kretzer said. “The last two seasons we have had a shot at the league title, but lost the last dual of the season. It’s great to finally get over the hump and earn that title. “

The Bullpups won eight out of the 14 matches against Winfield. Landon Crew set the tone in the 113 weight class after defeating Chris Rey, who is ranked No.4 in their class of 4A.

“Everyone on the team wrestled with passion and intensity,” Kretzer said. “ It was a total team effort. This is as good of a dual team from top to bottom that we’ve had in the 22 years of coaching at MHS.”
