It has been a successful week for both boys and girls on the McPherson High School wrestling team. For that, the Bullpups were awarded as the Great Plains Federal Credit Union Team of the Week, presented by the McPherson Sentinel.
The boys finished the season 15-1 and won the AVCTL League Championship last Thursday. The girls also made their mark by claiming first place during the second annual Kansas High School Girls State Championship on Saturday.
“This season has been a lot of fun. We knew we were going to have a tough team,” head coach Doug Kretzer said. “We kept everyone working hard and made sure we keep our eyes on the tasks week by week. I really felt like the results would speak for itself by the end of the year.”
Now that the girls’ season is over, Kretzer will shift momentum to focusing on the boys regional tournament this weekend. Kretzer compares his wrestlers to the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles after being the underdogs throughout the playoffs. He wants his boys to have the same mentality going into the tournament.
“The regular season is like its own season,” Kretzer said. “When you get into the post-season, it’s about self-confidence and believing in yourself.”
Regionals will begin on Friday at Abilene High School. The state championship will be next week at Salina. Winning at the tournament will be the icing on the cake for the Bullpups, Kretzer explained.
“Being awarded Team of the Week is at a point in time this season we’ll remember, along with being league champs and undefeated in dual matches,” Kretzer said. “It’s also no doubt we have the best girls team in the state. Now we have to see if the boys can match it.”
