WICHITA — Led by a dominating performance from Clayton Ouellette, the McPherson High School boys bowling team captured the AVCTL Division III/IV Championship Friday in Wichita.
The Bullpups needed every bit of Ouellette's league-high 703 series, as McPherson narrowly edged Andale, 2,322-2,309, for the league championship.
The battle for the individual league championship was a bit less dramatic, as Circle’s Spencer Faney bowled a 660 series for second place — well behind Ouellette.
“It was a good day for the boys,” head coach Herb Halinski said. “It was a close fight for the team; three of the boys did a good job, while the other three struggled a bit.”
McPherson’s Taylor Miller tied for ninth with a 573 series, while Matt Stiggins finished 14th with a 555 series.
“Taylor got off to a great start but lost his ball reaction,” Halinski said. “Matt finally got the right ball in his hand but struggled with spares today.”
On the girls’ side, Brooke Miller and Maysan Groote medaled for the Bullpups. Miller bowled a 502 series for 12th place, while Groote was right there with her in 13th place with a 498 series.
“I am proud of everyone as they gave their all,” Halinski said. “We will begin practicing for regionals next week.”
The Bullpups will look to qualify for state this Friday at regionals in Great Bend.
