SALINA — The McPherson High School wrestling team took seventh place and brought home a state champion at the Class 4A state tournament on Saturday.
Rhett Edmonson was the last man standing, being the only Bullpup to win first place in his weight class. At 120 pounds, Edmonson, a sophomore, outlasted Trig Tennant, a freshman out of Arkansas City High School in the third period 1-0. With the escape point he earned, Edmonson had to hold on in the final minute before winning the state title.
“It was a tough match. We knew it was going to be a tight match and points were going to be at a premium, and he got the escape. It ended up being the story right there. It was a long third period to ride out,” Bullpups head coach Doug Kretzer said.
Junior Scott Radke also competed in the championship in the 152-pound weight class against another Arkansas City opponent Montez Robinson. However, Radke came up just short, only losing 3-2 in the final minute mark. Full of frustration after a tough defeat, Radke took off his second place medal once he was done taking pictures at the podium. Kretzer understood how he was feeling and has high hopes for him next year when he returns for his senior season.
“You take second place at the state tournament by a point, you wonder where you could’ve gotten that point somewhere else. That’s going to stick in his craw a little bit. If he sleeps on it for a couple days, he’s going to be really proud of how far he came. He has come a long way and will learn from that loss. That specific scenario won’t beat him next year, Kretzer said.
After qualifying for third, Brynton Crews was the lone senior who finished in the top five at 138 pounds after winning by fall of 1:59 over Brady McDonald of Chanute High School.
“I’m really happy for him. It was a dogfight in that match to get in that consolation quarters and be a state placer. That was a big win for him, to get over that hump. To get your name on the wall is a big deal. It’s going to be there forever, and will cherish that forever," Kretzer said.
Overall, the Bullpups finished in seventh place with 67.5 points. Arkansas City claimed the team title with 158.5 points.
