The 53rd annual men's and 38th annual women's NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships get under way today in Pittsburg, Kansas, at the Robert W. Plaster Center.
The Tigers qualified 14 individuals for the championships, but have 10 competing this weekend. Nine of the Tiger participants are from the men's team, one from the women's team. Today's schedule includes the multi-discipline events of the pentathlon and the heptathlon. The Tigers don't have any competitors in those events, so their run for a national championship will get underway tomorrow. The Central guys are competing in the jumping events, the 60, 200, and 400 springs, and the 4x400 relay, while the lone female entrant for the Tigers, Amanda Murray will be running in the 60m hurdles, where she is nationally ranked.
The Tiger men are ranked in the long jump and triple jump, the 60m, the 200m, and the 400m. They have been ranked as a team in the top 5 all season, one of just two teams to hold that distinction. The other is defending champion Indiana Tech. The highest ranking the Tigers achieved this season was the #3 spot, the second week of the season.
The Tigers' bid for a national championship will get underway Friday afternoon with the prelims of the jumping events and the sprints. With the exception of the jumping events, all of the finals will then take place on Saturday. The finals of the long jump and triple jump will take place Friday evening.
