The Salina Post Office was evacuated and the Riley County bomb squad was called Tuesday morning after a suspicious package addressed to the Salina Police Department was found sitting on the floor in the post office lobby, a police department spokesman said.

Capt. Paul Forrester said police were called about the package at 9:24 a.m., the Salina Journal reported.

The post office was closed and roads were blocked around the building, which is at Fifth and Ash streets, until the contents of the package could be determined.

Forrester said a customer found the package on the east side of the lobby, near where customer post office boxes are located. A supervisor looked at the package before calling police.

Forester said anticipates the closure to last several hours.
