ANDOVER — The McPherson High School baseball team started the season 2-0 after beating Collegiate High School 12-7 in game one, and then Andover High School 15-3 during game two during a triangular at Andover High School.

During game one against Andover, the Bullpups had a rocky start after trailing 2-0 during the first inning. However, the Bullpups respond back with three runs in the third to give McPherson their first lead. Dylan Werries led the Bullpups with four RBIs. Gunner Reese was on the mound and finished the game with seven strikeouts in their win over Collegiate.

"We're really excited to open the season with a sweep over two solid ball clubs in our triangular at Andover. Wichita Collegiate is a well-coached team. Our guys fell behind early and really turned it on in the 3rd inning and came back to win. Our pitching left a lot to be desired, allowing seven runs on multiple walks, but I really thought our at-bats got better throughout the game," Bullpups head coach Heath Gerstner said.

In game two, it was a defensive ballgame for the Bullpups as all three pitchers rallied together to pitch a no-hitter for the first time season against Andover. Trey Hanken led the way with five strikeouts. The Bullpups dominated at-bat, scoring 10 runs in the first two innings. Honestee Whittker was the top hitter, leading the Bullpups with three hits and three RBIs.

"Coming out and scoring five runs in the top of the first really set the tone for the game. Trey Hanken really dominated the first three innings of the game not allowing a hit and then kind of lost his feel in the 4th allowing some walks. Zane Myers came in and did a great job getting us out of a jam and then we added a few runs to earn the run-rule," Gerstner said.

The Bullpups will be at Buhler High School on Monday for a two-game series. First pitch will be at 4 p.m.
