The Smoky Valley baseball team opened their 2018 season on Tuesday with two heartbreaking losses on the road in Haven 5-3 and 13-12.

In game one, the Vikings took a short lived 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning before Haven bounced back. Haven added one in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth and another in the fifth. While the Vikings added one run in the top of the sixth, it proved to be not enough for the win.

Smoky Valley head coach Troy Miller noted that Bret Heitschmidt had a solid day at the plate by going 2-for-3, while Zach Able took the loss on the mound.

In the game two extra-inning slugfest, Smoky Valley jumped ahead 7-4 in the top of the second, then added a run in the top of the third before Haven made a run with four in the bottom of the same inning to tie the game at 8-8.

Both teams put four runs on the board in the fourth and the game stayed that way until the bottom eighth-inning when Haven pushed across the winning run, 13-12.

The loss for the Vikings came despite pounding out three doubles by Kyle Anderson, Zion Thomas and Brandon Malm.

Overall from the plate Smoky Valley was led by Brandon Malm who hit 3-for-4, Ben Weldy who went 2-for-4, and Logan Rawson who was 2-for-5. Bruster Bengtson took the loss on the mound for the Vikings.

Next up, Smoky Valley will have their home opener against Halstead on April 2.
